This week MPs passed the third reading of the Domestic Abuse Bill. They also held Estimates Day debates, and there was a summer economic update from the Chancellor of the Exchequer.
Prime Minister's Questions
In PMQs this week, MPs asked the Prime Minister about comments made about care workers, ending free hospital parking for NHS staff and the risks of ending the furlough scheme.
Urgent questions and statements
This week there were three urgent questions and three statements.
Urgent questions:
- John Ashworth asked an urgent question on the Government's response to coronavirus.
- Jo Stevens asked an urgent question on a support package for the arts .
- Sir Peter Bottomley asked an urgent question on prisoners sentenced to death in Bahrain .
Statements:
- Dominic Raab - Global Human Rights sanctions regime.
- Rishi Sunak - Economic update.
- Nadine Dorries- Publication of independent medicines and medical devices safety review.
Legislation
On Monday 6 July, MPs approved the Domestic Abuse Bill.
The purpose of the Bill is to to make provision in relation to domestic abuse; to make provision for and in connection with the establishment of a Domestic Abuse Commissioner; to prohibit cross-examination in person in family proceedings in certain circumstances; to make provision about certain violent or sexual offences, and offences involving other abusive behaviour, committed outside the United Kingdom; and for connected purposes.
Estimates Days
Main Estimates Day debates took place on Tuesday 7 and Thursday 9 July 2020.
On Tuesday 7 July, there were debates on estimates relating to the following departments:
- The Department for Education, so far as it relates to closing the disadvantage gap and support for left behind children (on the application of Robert Halfon)
- HM Revenue and Customs, so far as it relates to the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme and support for the self-employed through the Self-employment Income Support Scheme (on the application of Mel Stride)
- The Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (on the application of Darren Jones)
On Thursday 9 July, the House heard debates on estimates relating to:
- The Department for International Development and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, so far as they relate to Official Development Assistance (on the application of Sarah Champion, Tom Tugendhat, Darren Jones and Yvette Cooper)
- The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (on the application of Mr Clive Betts and Meg Hillier)
