Lords debates educational opportunities

On Thursday 5 March, members of the Lords debated the educational opportunities available to children and young people from working class backgrounds. Speakers included former teachers and secretaries of state for education.

This was a general debate. They normally take place on a Thursday in the chamber. During debates, members are able to put their experience to good use, discussing current issues and drawing the government's attention to concerns.
The debate was proposed by Baroness Morris of Yardley (Labour), chair of the Birmingham Education Partnership and former Secretary of State for Education.

- Lord Bassam of Brighton (Labour), former social worker and former leader of Brighton and Hove Council

- Lord Woolley of Woodford (Crossbench), founder and director, Operation Black Vote.
Baroness Berridge (Conservative), Parliamentary Under Secretary of the State School System, responded on behalf of the government.
