This week in the Commons, MPs debated Covid-19, the Overseas Operations (Service Personnel and Veterans), Agriculture and Immigration and Social Security Coordination (EU Withdrawal) Bills, and considered proposed Health Protection (Coronovirus) regulations.

Urgent questions and statements

This week there were three statements and three urgent questions.

Statements

Ministerial statements are a way for Ministers to bring an important matter to the attention of the House.

This week the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, gave a statement providing an update on Covid-19.

Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, gave an update on the economy.

Minister for Security, James Brokenshire, made a statement on the UK terrorism threat level.

Urgent questions

If an urgent or important matter arises which an MP believes requires an immediate answer from a government minister, they may apply to the Speaker to ask an urgent question.

This week there was an urgent question from Shadow Chancellor, Anneliese Dodds, on economic support in areas subject to additional public health restrictions.

There was an urgent question from Shadow Minister for Education, Tulip Siddiq, on Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe.

There was also an urgent question from Andrew Mitchell on the impact of new Covid-19 regulations on the ability of terminally ill adults to travel abroad for assisted death.

Bills and legislation

A Bill is a proposal for a new law, or a proposal to change an existing law that is presented for debate before Parliament.

Debates take place in Westminster Hall on Mondays if agreed by the Petitions Committee, and on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
