This week in the Commons the United Kingdom Internal Market Bill 2019-21 progressed through 2 days of its Committee stage, in a Committee of the Whole House. It will continue its Committee stage in the Chamber next week.

Urgent questions and statements

This week there were four statements and one urgent question.

Statements

Ministerial statements are a way for Ministers to bring an important matter to the attention of the House.

This week the following statements were made:

Secretary of State for International Trade, Liz Truss made a statement giving an update on the Japan Free Trade Agreement.

Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice, Robert Buckland made a statement on the Sentencing White Paper.

Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Matt Hancock made a statement on a Covid-19 update.

Urgent questions

If an urgent or important matter arises which an MP believes requires an immediate answer from a government minister, they may apply to the Speaker to ask an urgent question.

This week the Shadow Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Jonathan Ashworth, asked an Urgent Question on coronavirus.

Select committee statements

A select committee can apply to the Backbench Business Committee to make a statement in the Chamber about the publication of a report or launch of an inquiry.

This week there was one select committee statement:

William Wragg, Chair of the Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee made a statement on the Committee’s fifth report: A Public Inquiry into the Government’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Bills and legislation

A Bill is a proposal for a new law, or a proposal to change an existing law that is presented for debate before Parliament.

This week MPs scrutinised the following Bills:

The United Kingdom Internal Market Bill passed the Committee stage (day 2) on 16 September. The Bill will go through Committee stage (day 3) on 21 September.
