Lords debates security, defence, development and foreign policy

Members of the Lords debated the government's Integrated Review of Security, Defence, Development and Foreign Policy, on Thursday 22 April.

Speakers included a former Commander in Chief of the Fleet and Chair of the Lords Select Committee on International Relations and Defence.

This was a general debate. During debates, members put their experience to good use to discuss current issues and draw the government's attention to concerns.

Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon (Conservative), Minister of State in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, put forward the debate.

  • Baroness Northover (Liberal Democrat), Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs and former Parliamentary Under-Secretary in the Department for International Development
  • Lord Truscott (Non-affiliated), former member, Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies (RUSI) International Advisory Board 
  • Lord West of Spithead (Labour) former First Sea Lord and Commander in Chief of the Fleet

Lord Godson (Conservative), Director, Policy Exchange Ltd (think tank) made his maiden speech.

Baroness Goldie (Conservative), Minister of State in the Ministry of Defence, responded on behalf of the government.
