Lord Speaker meets with German Ambassador to the UK
16 July 2021
The German Ambassador to the UK, Andreas Michaelis, met with the Lord Speaker to discuss strengthening inter-parliamentary relations between Germany and the UK.
Ambassador Michaelis explained that the German Parliament is now focussed on reform in order to reduce its size. This resonated with the Lord Speaker, who said that he hopes to make further progress on reducing the size of the House in conversations with the Prime Minister. The Lord Speaker emphasised his readiness to contribute to enhancing the inter-parliamentary co-operation between Germany and the UK, which was welcomed by the Ambassador.
Part of the Lord Speaker’s role is to support the work of the House with overseas legislatures and other international bodies by acting as the Ambassador for the House and engaging in parliamentary diplomacy both at home and abroad. Find out more about the role of the Lord Speaker.
