We’ve put together a list of highlights to keep you on top of the parliamentary business coming up this week that you need to know about.  

Monday 10 May

The House is not sitting on Monday.

Tuesday 11 May

The State Opening of Parliament will take place. The House will meet at 11.25am for the Queen’s Speech.

The Queen's Speech is the speech that the Queen reads out in the Lords Chamber during State Opening of Parliament. It sets out the programme of legislation that the Government intend to pursue in the forthcoming parliamentary session.

Due to covid-19 restrictions only the Speaker and invited party leaders and Government and Opposition whips will process to hear the speech delivered in the Lords.

Afterwards the House will suspend until 2.30pm.

The debate on the Queen’s Speech is then opened. Two backbench Members from the Government side will propose and second a Motion for an Address (thanking the Queen for the Speech), after which the Leader of the Opposition and the Prime Minister will speak.

Debate on the Queen’s Speech may continue until 10.00pm.

Wednesday 12 May

MPs will meet from 11.30am on Wednesday.

Layla Moran will ask an urgent question: "To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, if he will make a statement on the violence in Israel and Palestine".

The Prime Minister will make a statement on Covid-19.

Debate on the Queen’s Speech will be resumed on subsequent days. The debate normally lasts for six sitting days. On the final day of the debate the House votes on the Motion, and there may be votes on amendments to the Motion on the penultimate and final days.

Thursday 13 May

MPs will meet from 9.30am on Thursday.

There will be Business Questions to the Leader of the House.

There will also be the following Ministerial statement:

  1. Secretary of State for Northern Ireland on findings of the Ballymurphy Inquest

Debate on the Queen’s Speech will be resumed on subsequent days. The debate normally lasts for six sitting days. On the final day of the debate the House votes on the Motion, and there may be votes on amendments to the Motion on the penultimate and final days.

Friday 14 May

The House is not sitting on Friday.
