Four short debates in the Lords

Lords Thursday debates

One Thursday each month, the House of Lords holds four short debates in Grand Committee. On Thursday 27 May, members debated the following subjects.

Climate change

Members discussed the UK's climate change targets in a debate, proposed by Baroness Sheehan (Liberal Democrat).

Ethnicity and child poverty

Members discussed the review by the Office for National Statistics 'Child Poverty and Education Outcomes' in a debate proposed by Lord Woolley of Woodford (Crossbench).

Neurological services

Members dicussed the impact of COVID-19 on people with neurological conditions in a debate proposed by Baroness Gale (Labour).

Genocide

Members discussed bringing perpetrators of genocide to justice in a debate proposed by Lord Alton of Liverpool (Crossbench).

Short debates

Short debates are an opportunity for members to draw the government’s attention to concerns and hold it to account. They last for about 60 minutes, a  minister or spokesperson responds on behalf of the government at the end.

The four short Thursday debates each month take place in Grand Committee, work away from the main chamber.
