The inter-parliamentary links between Hungary and the UK "are in good shape", the Hungarian Ambassador to the UK told the Speaker of the House of Commons.

His Excellency Dr Ferenc Kumin made the comments during a meeting hosted by Sir Lindsay as part of his Speaker-led diplomacy to establish enduring ties between countries and parliamentarians.

Dr Kumin was particularly pleased to see the Hungarian flag flying over New Palace Yard, in the year of the 100th anniversary of UK-Hungary bilateral relations.

Mr Speaker, whose borough of Chorley was twinned with the Hungarian city of Székesfehérvár in the 1990s, commented: "Our friendship needs to grow."

Around 5,000 UK citizens live in Hungary and more than 150,000 Hungarians live in the UK.

Dr Kumin said Brits make up the second highest number of visitors to Hungary, with Germany taking up the number one spot.

The importance of regular exchanges between the Parliaments of the UK and Hungary, trade, economic growth and Covid vaccination rates were also discussed.
