What is the House of Lords?
The Lords is the second chamber of UK Parliament. It plays a crucial role in making and shaping laws, questioning government action and investigating public policy.
Checking and challenging the government
The House of Lords has recently held the government to account on issues including the situation in Afghanistan, lorry driver shortages and the Northern Ireland Protocol. Members also pushed for changes to bills relating to animal welfare, improvements to the environment and more.
Select committees
House of Lords committees investigate specialist subjects, taking advantage of members’ expertise. So far this year, Lords committees have looked into subjects such as youth unemployment, sport policy in the UK and the impact of a hybrid online and offline world. Current committee investigations include an inquiry into trade in goods between the UK and the EU and digital regulation.
