The House of Lords debated the situation in Ukraine on Friday 25 February.

This was a general debate. During the debate, members drew on their experience and expertise to raise issues with the government including:

  • extending current sanctions
  • the upcoming bill on economic crime
  • cutting Russia out of SWIFT payment system
  • reducing European dependence on oil and gas from Russia
  • humanitarian support to Ukraine
  • visas and help for refugees
  • the UK's role in Nato and Ukraine's potential membership.

Lord Sedwill (Crossbench), former Cabinet Secretary and National Security Advisor, made his maiden speech.

Baroness Goldie (Conservative), minister in the Ministry of Defence, opened the debate on behalf of the government.

Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon (Conservative), minister in the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, responded on behalf of the government.
