UK Parliament Week returns for 2022
26 July 2022
UK Parliament Week (UKPW) is an annual event that engages people from across the UK with Parliament, spreading the word about what Parliament is, what it does and how everyone can get involved.
It is a great opportunity to empower young people to use their voice to make a difference and participate in their democracy both locally and in Westminster. Last year, 90% of participants understood that their 'engagement with the UK Parliament is essential to democracy' as a result of taking part in UKPW.
Last year 1.1 million people took part in over 10,000 activities in every region and nation of the UK, and in many other countries around the world. It’s free to take part in UKPW. Once you have completed a sign up form a free kit will be posted out to you. The kit is packed with goodies including an activity booklet, bunting, stickers, and a ballot box. This year’s special kit item is a time-travelling board game celebrating the restoration of Big Ben and the Elizabeth Tower. It’s a fun way to bring the story of Parliament and democracy to life for all ages.
What’s involved?
There’s lots of ideas for fun activities to do online or in a group setting with activity booklets available for primary and secondary schools, youth groups and post-16 groups. Activity organisers will have everything they need to tailor their UK Parliament Week activity to suit whatever time they have available and the age groups they’re working with.
Last year UK Parliament week was collectively celebrated in all sorts of ways, including:
- online Q&A sessions, quizzes and lively debates
- debating issues and holding votes
- creating petitions
- themed assemblies and school council elections
- baking, crafting and colouring
- virtual chats with MPs, members of the Lords, local councillors or mayors and others...
