What's on in the Lords 27-30 June

Highlights of what’s coming up this week:
Questions
Look out for questions on addressing the gender pensions gap, building a fairer Commonwealth, how trade unionists can work with the government to level up the economy and the link between advertising, body image and mental health.
Bills
Members are expected to complete line by line examination of the Schools Bill at committee stage, and debate the key principles of the Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Bill and the Social Housing (Regulation) Bill at second reading.
Debates
Members will debate combating violence against women and domestic violence, plus the causes of crime and reoffending and the effectiveness of rehabilitation.

Questions
Members will question the government for 40 minutes on:
- forging of customer signatures by banks
- link between advertising, body image and mental health
- Just Energy Transition Partnership with South Africa
- airport delays.
Debates
Members of the House of Lords will debate the following topics:
- causes of crime and reoffending and the effectiveness of rehabilitation
- 2022 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting

In Grand Committee, work away from the chamber, members will debate the Environmental Principles Policy Statement.

Monday 27 June
Questions
Members pressed the government for 40 minutes on:
- levelling up plans and the needs of the Roma community
- products from online retailers that can be used for suicide
- British Army’s troop size
- the gender pensions gap.
Legislation
Members debated the key principles and main purpose of the Social Housing (Regulation) Bill at second reading, and conducted the second reading and the remaining stages of the Social Security (Additional Payments) Bill.
Members concluded line by line examination of the Schools Bill on day 6 of committee stage.
Debate

In Grand Committee, work away from the chamber, members debated the International Agreements Committee report on the Council of Europe Convention (Istanbul Convention) on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence.
Statement
The House questioned the government on British Council contractors in Afghanistan.
Tuesday 28 June
Questions
Members questioned the government for 40 minutes on:
- age as a trigger for large increases in insurance premiums
- orders for small modular nuclear reactors
- building a fairer Commonwealth
- representations to Russia on behalf of Aiden Aslin and Shaun Pinner.
Motion to regret
The House debated a motion to regret regulations on the position and responsibilities of retail pharmacists. Lord Hunt of Kings Heath (Labour), put forward the motion on the grounds that the regulations do not make provision about the wider workforce challenges facing the community pharmacy sector.
Legislation
Members debated the key principles and main purpose of the Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Bill at second reading.
In Grand Committee, work away from the chamber, members debated the following orders and regulations:
- local government
- local authority and combined authority elections
- plant health
- common agricultural policy
- occupational pension schemes.
Statement
Members questioned the government following a statement on the draft Mental Health Bill.
Urgent questions
The House of Lords quizzed government on two urgent questions repeated from the House of Commons on:
- women’s rights to access reproductive healthcare
- the rise in the incidence of rape not taken forward for criminal prosecution.
Wednesday 29 June
Questions
Members questioned the government on:
- teaching of citizenship education in schools
- amending the Extradition Act 2003
- how trade unionists can work with the government to level up the economy
- rail dispute: legal powers of the Secretary of State for Transport.
Legislation
Members examined the Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure Bill on day 2 of committee stage.
Short Debate
Members of the House of Lords questioned the government on its steps to combat the rising cost of agricultural fertilizer and feed.
