Lords questions government on Ukraine

The House of Lords continues to press the government on its response to the invasion of Ukraine through questions, debates and legislation.
The first question on the build up of Russian forces on the Ukraine border was asked in the chamber by Lord Campbell of Pittenweem on Thursday 15 April 2021. Since then, members have pressed the government on a range of issues from selling military equipment to Ukraine to allowing a greater number of Ukrainian refugees into the UK.

House of Lords presses the government following a statement on the Ukraine Sponsorship Scheme.
Tuesday 15 March
Lord Berkeley asks the government what plans they have to facilitate trains to the United Kingdom for refugees fleeing from Ukraine.
Monday 14 March
All remaining stages of the Economic Crime (Transparency and Enforcement) Bill were completed and the bill became an Act of Parliament after it received Royal Assent.
Thursday 10 March
House of Lords questions the government following a statement on the latest situation in Ukraine and a question on the visa process for refugees.
Baroness Bonham-Carter of Yarnbury asks the government what steps they are taking to support the provision of the BBC World Service to the people of Ukraine.
Wednesday 9 March
Legislation
House of Lords debates the main purpose and key principles of the Economic Crime (Transparency and Enforcement) Bill. The draft bill has been fast-tracked through Parliament in light of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Members of the House of Lords join MPs in the Commons to hear from President Zelenskyy of Ukraine.
Nationality and Borders Bill
The House of Lords agrees to government amendments to the Nationality and Borders Bill allowing visa penalties to be extended to countries that present a risk to international peace and security, or whose actions lead or are likely to lead to armed conflict or a breach of humanitarian law. These changes were brought forward following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The House of Lords debates the situation in Ukraine. Members taking part include a former Cabinet Secretary and National Security Advisor, Defence Secretary and Secretary General of NATO.

Members question the government after a statement in the House of Commons following confirmation that the first Russian missiles had struck Ukraine.

Wednesday 23 February
Lord Browne of Ladyton asks the government what assessment they have made of the implications of the withdrawal by the United Kingdom, United States of America, and Canada, of their monitors from the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Special Monitoring Mission in Ukraine.
Tuesday 22 February
The House of Lords questions the government following a statement previously made in the House of Commons on the latest situation in Ukraine. This follows President Putin’s announcement that Russian troops would enter the regions of Donetsk and Luhansk in eastern Ukraine.
