The Speaker of the House of Commons, Rt Hon Sir Lindsay Hoyle MP, visited Gibraltar from 5 to 8 December with a focus on how young people engage in democratic processes and their community, including taking part in the University of Gibraltar’s graduation ceremony as the University’s Chancellor.
The Speaker visited Bayside Comprehensive School who took part in last month’s UK Parliament Week and where students voted on the inaugural Make Your Mark ballot for the UK Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies, submitting their votes to decide which topic representatives from each Overseas Territory and Crown Dependency will deliver speeches on in the House of Commons Chamber at next year’s UK Youth Parliament. The Speaker also took questions from students about his role as Speaker, the new Parliament and the relationship between the UK Parliament and the Overseas Territories.
The Speaker also had the opportunity to meet with Guides and Scouts during their activities and to hear about how important being part of these organisations is to them as young people.
Attending the University of Gibraltar’s graduation, the Speaker congratulated the Graduates on their achievements and highlighted the important role they now play in the University and Gibraltar’s future.
While in Gibraltar the Speaker met with members of British Forces Gibraltar working at both the Naval Base and members of the Gibraltar Regiment. He also met with the Governor of Gibraltar, Lieutenant General Sir Ben Bathurst KCVO, CBE and members of his team and congratulated Sir Ben on his recent appointment as Governor of Gibraltar.
