Election of new Deputy Speakers
On Tuesday 23 July, the Speaker of the House of Commons announced in the Chamber that Nusrat Ghani, Judith Cummins and Caroline Nokes had been elected to the Chair as Deputy Speakers of the House of Commons.
Nusrat Ghani - Chairman of Ways and Means
Judith Cummins - First Deputy Chairman of Ways and Means
Caroline Nokes - Second Deputy Chairman of Ways and Means
In a statement release the Speaker said:
‘This Parliament is breaking more glass ceilings than ever before, with the biggest number of women MPs ever – and now an all-female team of Deputies.
‘All three MPs are incredible politicians who are well-respected by this House, and I am looking forward to working with them.’
New Parliament church service
The Speaker attended a service at St Margaret’s Church, next to Westminster Abbey, to mark the start of the new Parliament. Thank you to St Margaret’s for continuing to support this tradition and to all the Members and staff who attended.
Prime Ministers Questions (PMQs)
At 12 midday on Wednesday 23 July, the Speaker chaired the first PMQs of the new Parliament. This is the time in the week that MPs can put questions and topics directly to the Prime Minister for him to answer on the official record.
South Asian Heritage Month Reception
The Speaker was pleased to welcome MPs, staff and guests of the South Asian community to Speaker’s House to mark South Asian Heritage Month. The Speaker delivered a speech alongside MPs Dame Priti Patel, Rushanara Ali and South Asian Heritage Month co-founder Jasvir Singh CBE.
