Lords concludes detailed check of Data Protection and Digital Information Bill
25 April 2024
Members of the Lords concluded their line by line examination of the Data Protection and Digital Information Bill at committee stage on Wednesday 24 April.
The Data Protection and Digital Information Bill aims to update and simplify the UK’s data protection framework.
It contains provisions to require social media companies to retain information in connection with an investigation into the death of a child who was suspected to have died by suicide. The bill will also legislate to increase fines for nuisance calls as well as reduce 'user consent' pop-ups and banners.
The 2023-2024 session of Parliament ended (prorogued) on 24 May 2024 ahead of the General Election on 4 July and so this bill will make no further progress.
