House of Lords pauses for Easter

As Parliament’s second chamber, the House of Lords checks and challenges the work of government and investigates public policy.

Scrutinising draft laws

So far this year, members have convinced the government to act on banning foreign state ownership of newspapers and have asked the House of Commons to think again on changes to the Safety of Rwanda (Asylum and Immigration) Bill.

Pressing for action

The Lords has quizzed government action in questions on topics including funding for free childcare, the Post Office Horizon Scandal, police recruitment, the gender pay gap, knife crime, child obesity, home ownership and the Israel/Gaza conflict.

Raising issues

Members have considered issues and policy in debates including river pollution, maternity services, Windrush compensation, reducing poverty, and local government finances.

Committees

In committees, members are currently exploring issues including UK high streets, governance of the Union, food, diet and obesity, modern slavery and preterm birth. House of Lords committees are smaller groups of members doing subject-focused work away from the chamber.

Return to business

The House of Lords has paused for Easter recess and returns to business on Monday 15 April.
