Automated Vehicles Bill completes journey through Parliament

The Automated Vehicles Bill will implement the recommendations of the four-year review carried out by the Law Commissions of England & Wales and Scotland to set the legal framework for the safe deployment of self-driving vehicles across Great Britain.

Consideration of amendments

The bill was considered by the House of Lords between 8 November 2023 and 19 February 2024 before passing to the House of Commons. 

On Wednesday 8 May, members of the Lords considered changes (PDF) made to the bill by MPs in the Commons in a process known as parliamentary 'ping pong'.

Subjects under consideration included:

• powers of Welsh ministers and traffic regulations in Wales
• money received by a traffic commissioner.

Next steps

As both Houses have agreed on the text of the bill, it now awaits the final stage of Royal Assent where it will become an Act of Parliament (law).

Line-by-line examination of the bill took place during committee stage on Wednesday 10 January and Monday 15 January.

Second reading, a full debate on the key principles of the bill, took place on Tuesday 28 November.
