14 November 2024
The Speaker of the House of Commons has welcomed his counterpart from Somalia - on his first ever visit to the UK.
Sir Lindsay Hoyle said he was ‘delighted’ to meet the Hon. Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur (Madobe), Speaker of the Somali Federal Parliament, and his delegation, at Speaker’s House.
Mr Madobe said this was not only his first time in the UK, but the first visit to the UK Parliament by a Somali Speaker.
During their meeting, the two Speakers discussed democracy, the prospect of Somalia electing local representatives and Members of Parliament by direct vote, and MP exchange visits.
Sir Lindsay said he would be happy to offer the support of House of Commons clerks to share best practice and experience with the Somali Parliament.
The Somali Speaker was invited to Parliament by Sir Lindsay as part of his Speaker-led diplomacy to establish enduring ties between countries and parliamentarians.
As part of their visit, Mr Madobe, and his team, watched Prime Minister’s Questions in the Chamber, ahead of a reception in his honour at Speaker’s House.
