Parliamentary Outreach will be working with Essex library, museums and archives services and the charity group Rethink to produce 'Breaking Barriers', a pilot touring exhibition and free adult education programme to run during 2009-10.

Rethink is a charity that helps people recover from severe mental illness and develop a better quality of life. Working in partnership with Parliamentary Outreach will allow users to develop creative and social skills and engage with the work of Parliament.

Looking at the collections and records of local suffragists and suffragettes, members of Rethink will work with a professional artist to produce a piece of art that reflects the stories of the suffrage movement in Essex and the struggle for women to get the vote.

The 'Breaking Barriers' exhibition will be shown at the following venues during 2009-2010:

  • Southend Museum: 6 June – 29 August 2009
  • Brentwood Library: 19 September – 22 November 2009
  • Epping Forrest Museum: 9 January – 14 March 2010
  • Colchester Library: 19 June – 5 September 2010
  • Chelmsford Library: 27 March – 30 May 2010
