New Committee chooses Chairman

On 19 January 2009 the House of Commons appointed fourteen Members of Parliament to the new Energy and Climate Change Committee. The Committee chose Mr Elliot Morley MP as Chairman at its first meeting today.
The remit of the new Committee is to examine the expenditure, administration and policy of the Department of Energy and Climate Change and its associated public bodies.
The Committee will be taking oral evidence from the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, Rt Hon Edward Miliband MP, at 9.15am on 25 February. The Committee will also be holding a one-off oral evidence session with the UK’s leading energy companies to look at the outlook for energy prices in 2009 and future investment in electricity generating capacity (date to be confirmed).
The Committee’s initial inquiries will be into:
- UK offshore oil and gas
- the future of the national grid
- the green economy and low carbon technologies
Detailed terms of reference will be issued after the Committee’s next meeting on 4 February.

Mr Elliot Morley was called to the Chair.
The Chairman declared an interest as being in receipt of part-time research assistance provided by Network for Animals. He also declared an interest as Chairman of GLOBE UK and GLOBE International (unpaid positions).
