‘Burying London’ exhibition
5 March 2009 (updated on 22 April 2010)
Working in partnership with Kensington and Chelsea Library Services and the , the team are to launch a small touring exhibition looking at the Public Cemeteries Act of 1832.
Local communities petitioned Parliament to have public cemeteries as church burial grounds were very overcrowded. Because of the Church monopoly of burials at the time, people like George Frederick Carden first had to convince public opinion and the authorities that a change in law was necessary to create public cemeteries. This exhibition will look at how the Victorian community in Chelsea petitioned Parliament and changed the law.
This pilot exhibition will tour the following venues from April 2009:
- Kensington Central Library: 6 April 2009 – 29 May 2009
- North Kensington Library: 1 June 2009 – 24 July 2009
- Brompton Library: 27 July 2009 – 18 September 2009
- Chelsea Library: 21 September 2009 – 13 November 2009
- Central Local Studies Library: 16 November 2009 – 8 January 2010
