People and Parliament inquiry launched

The House of Lords Information Committee has launched an online forum to listen to the views of the public as part of its new inquiry looking into how the House of Lords can relate better to the public.
The ‘People and Parliament’ inquiry will investigate how the House of Lords could improve public understanding of its work and role, and how people would like to interact with the Lords and Parliament. The Committee is hoping to hear new ideas for improving the way the House of Lords communicates with the public.
All submissions will be considered by the Information Committee as it draws together the suggestions and views submitted over the course of its inquiry. The Committee aims to publish its report by the end of July 2009.
How to take part
The ‘People and Parliament’ inquiry is open to everyone. You can participate online or in writing.
Online
You are invited to submit your views online using the web forum, or as a video response to the Committee’s YouTube video, on the following questions:
- How could the House of Lords improve public understanding of its work?
- How could the House of Lords increase people’s interest in its work and Members?
- How could the House of Lords best enable people to interact with it?
- The House of Lords is particularly interested in hearing the views of young people. How do you and other young people view the House of Lords?
If you are under the age of 12 please get your parent/guardian’s permission before participating in the forum. Individual registration details will not be made public. The web forum will run until 28 April 2009. Submitted responses will be moderated according to the discussion rules before they appear online.
In writing
If you want to submit more detailed ideas in response to these questions and have additional queries on outreach, online communication and engagement and press, media and broadcasting, you are invited to submit your ideas in the form of written evidence to the Committee.

The deadline for the submission of written evidence is Tuesday 5 May 2009.
Public meetings
The Committee held its first public evidence session as part of its People and Parliament Inquiry at 4pm on Wednesday 18 March 2009. The Committee heard evidence from the Hansard Society, the UK Youth Parliament and Brent Youth Parliament.
