Senior members of the judiciary can be appointed to the House of Lords as life Peers rather than Law Lords. As life Peers they have not been appointed to hear cases in the House of Lords in its capacity as the highest court.
The Law Lords will become Justices of the Supreme Court of the UK when the Supreme Court opens on 1 October 2009.
