Baroness McIntosh of Hudnall will open Parliamentary Outreach's 'Breaking Barriers' exhibition at Southend Museum on Friday 5 June 2009.

'Breaking Barriers' looks at how the stories of local suffragists and suffragettes in Essex can be relevant to modern audiences. The exhibition was developed in partnership with Essex County Council, The Women's Library, Rethink, Epping Forest Museum, and Southend Discovery Museum.

An original artwork by Rachel Gadsden will also be on display at the opening. As part of the project, Rachel worked with Rethink, a national charity that works with people who are severely mentally ill. The project helped members of Rethink look at the history of Parliament, how past communities got their voices heard and what this means for engaging with Parliament today.
