Ed Balls, Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families, made a statement to the Commons on the recommendations of the report of the expert group on assessment, which was set up to advise the Government on the future of testing and assessment and its role in school accountability.

Oral statements are made after Question Time (or at 11am on a Friday). The statements usually relate to matters of policy or government actions.

At the end of a statement, MPs can respond or question the government minister on its contents.
