Health Secretary, Andy Burnham, updated the Commons on swine flu telling MPs that the World Health Organisation had raised its pandemic alert status to phase 6 and explaining the criteria for making this declaration, based on the geographic spread of the virus and not its severity.

Oral ministerial statements are made after Question Time in the Commons - or 11am on Fridays. They usually relate to questions of government policy or particular actions. At the end of a statement MPs can respond or question the government minister on its contents.
