New appointment of Clerk Assistant of the Commons

The Queen has approved the Speaker’s recommendation that Robert Rogers, at present Clerk of Legislation, House of Commons, be appointed Clerk Assistant and Director General Chamber and Committee Services of the House of Commons with effect from 1 October 2009.
The post of Clerk Assistant dates from 1640; the Department of Chamber and Committee Services was created in 2007 and, with 570 staff, provides advice and support for all the proceedings of the House and its Committees, and also contains the Official Report (Hansard) and the Serjeant-at-Arms’s Directorate, responsible for ceremonial and security.
Robert Rogers, 59, the present Clerk of Legislation, joined the Clerk of the House’s Department in 1972. He has served in a wide variety of posts in the House Service including Clerk of the Defence Committee and of Private Members’ Bills, Principal Clerk of Select Committees and Principal Clerk of the Table Office. He writes and lectures on Parliament and governance and is co-author of How Parliament Works.
