Parliamentary Outreach hosted a public meeting of the Culture, Media and Sport Committee as part of its ongoing inquiry into local and regional media.
Nearly 100 people gathered at the Park Inn Hotel in York on 1 July to debate the importance and future of local and regional media with the Culture, Media and Sport Committee, a Select Committee of the House of Commons.
The meeting, which was chaired by ITV Calendar presenter Christine Talbot, heard from a wide variety of people – from concerned individuals and small businesses to local media staff and voluntary and community organisations.
Attracting participants from around the north of England, the meeting covered issues including funding for local media, the changing role of local journalists and relationships between journalists and the communities they cover.
The public meeting was part of a two-day visit to the region by the Committee, which also included meetings with the Press Association, Yorkshire Television, Real Radio and the Yorkshire Post.
