Commons pass new ID card regulations
9 July 2009 (updated on 22 April 2010)
MPs voted in the Commons on three new identity card-related regulations or Statutory Instruments (SIs). All three were passed and they now move to the House of Lords
- Commons Hansard: Vote: ID card regulations
- Draft SIs: Identity Card Regulations 2009
- Home Office: Explanatory memorandum
- About Parliament: Delegated legislation: Statutory instruments
- Topical issues: Privacy
The first of these SIs - the draft Identity Cards Act 2006 (Provision of Information without Consent) Regulations 2009 - will enable the Home Secretary to disclose information from an individual's entry on the ID database, without that person's consent, to other government departments and agencies.
The other two SIs lay down fees and penalties that can be applied to anyone registered on the ID database.
