The Public Administration Select Committee (PASC) hears evidence on the House of Lords appointments process, from 10.00 am

The Committee takes evidence from Lord Jay of Ewelme, Chair of the House of Lords Appointments Commission (HOLAC).

HOLAC is an independent, advisory body, which was established by the Prime Minister in May 2000 and has two main functions:

  • to recommend individuals for appointment as non-party-political life peers
  • to vet nominations for life peers, including those nominated by the UK political parties, to ensure the highest standards of propriety

HOLAC’s work is subject to regular scrutiny by PASC. Lord Jay first gave evidence to PASC a year ago shortly before taking up post as Chair of HOLAC. This session is an opportunity to question him on his first year in office, as well as to explore other current issues of concern relating to appointments to the House of Lords.
