Parliamentary Standards Bill: committee stage

Members of the Lords discussed the second - and final - day of committee stage on the Parliamentary Standards Bill on 16 July.
Amendments (proposals for change) discussed included clauses (parts) 8-12 of the Bill covering the penalties that are to be brought into force to deal with Members of Parliament who have broken the law, further functions of the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority and other issues.

Key proposals of the Bill include:
- establishing a body known as the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority and an officer known as the Commissioner for Parliamentary Investigations
- making provision relating to salaries and allowances for Members of the House of Commons and to their financial interests and conduct.
Report stage - a further chance to amend the Bill - is scheduled for 20 July. Every suggested change to the Bill can be discussed and every clause has to be agreed to.
During report stage every Member can take part and votes can happen.
