Parliamentary Standards Bill: second reading

Twenty-six Members of the Lords, with wide-ranging experience and expertise in legal, political and constitutional affairs, contributed to the second reading debate on the key principles of the Parliamentary Standards Bill in the Lords Chamber on 8 July

Key proposals of the Bill include:
- establishing a body known as the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority and an officer known as the Commissioner for Parliamentary Investigations
- making provision relating to salaries and allowances for Members of the House of Commons and to their financial interests and conduct.
The committee stage - line by line examination of the Bill - is scheduled for 14 July. Every suggested change (amendment) to the Bill can be discussed and every clause (part) has to be agreed to.
During committee stage every Member can take part and votes can happen.
