The House of Commons agreed on 20 July 2009 to set up a Select Committee on House of Commons Reform.

The Committee has to report no later than 13 November 2009 on four distinct matters:

(i) the appointment of members and chairmen of select committees

(ii) the appointment of the Chairman and Deputy Chairmen of Ways and Means

(iii) scheduling business in the House

(iv) enabling the public to initiate debates and proceedings in the House.

The Committee has decided that in view of the very tight timetable it will not hear formal oral evidence but will proceed by detailed consideration of the matters referred to it. In view of the Procedure Committee’s intention to conduct an inquiry into the appointment of the Chairman and Deputy Chairmen of Ways and Means, it is not seeking separate views on that specific matter.

How to submit evidence

Written evidence should be sent by 12 October 2009 to reformcom@parliament.uk, or in writing to the Clerk to the Committee, House of Commons Reform Committee, Journal Office, House of Commons, SW1P 3JA.

Please note

Each submission should:

  • begin with a short summary in bullet point form
  • have numbered paragraphs
  • be in Word format or a rich text format with as little use of colour or logos as possible.
