Inquiry continues into science research funding priorities

The Lords Science and Technology Committee inquiry on setting science research funding priorities hears evidence from a number of expert witnesses, including former Labour Science Minister, Lord Sainsbury of Turville. The session starts at 10.40 am

The inquiry is investigating how Government, and other public bodies responsible for the allocation of funding for science and technology research, set priorities in the context of likely overall cuts in public spending. The inquiry covers all aspects of science and technology, including the medical and engineering sciences.
It is examining:
- how decisions are made to fund research to meet societal needs
- the balance of funding for targeted versus unsolicited response-mode curiosity-driven research
- how research is commissioned in government departments and agencies
