Every Monday afternoon during the summer recess 2009 (22 July-12 October), the text of all written answers and statements will be posted on Parliament's website

The most recent set of answers from the Government - to written questions from Members of the Lords - covers blood required for transfusions in Afghanistan to the cost of producing written copies of the Government's report 'World Class Places'.

Holding the Government to account

Questions for written answer are used by Members of the Lords to extract information and, during summer recess, are a way for the House of Lords to continue to hold the Government to account - even though Parliament isn't sitting.

During last session (2007-08), the Government answered 5,814 written questions from Members of the Lords and made 1,242 statements.
