The West Midlands Select Committee will hold its second evidence session of its inquiry into the effects of the economic downturn on the people of the West Midlands at 4.15 pm

Appearing before the Committee will be:

  • Mick Laverty, CEO, Advantage West Midlands
  • Margaret Tovey, Regional Director, Jobcentre Plus
  • Trudi Elliot, Regional Director, Government Office for the West Midlands

The Chair of the West Midlands Select Committee, Richard Burden MP, said:

"It is essential that we don’t lose sight of the human consequences of the economic downturn here in the West Midlands. That's why we're looking into the best ways to help people deal with redundancy, get support with housing issues, get back into work and cope with debt.

"We want to find out what different agencies are doing well – and what they are not – so that examples of best practice can be spread more widely.

"On Monday we will be taking evidence from Advantage West Midlands, Jobcentre Plus and the Government Office for the West Midlands. Along with what we heard from unions, citizens’ groups and business leaders in West Bromwich last week, this evidence will be exceptionally valuable to us in taking our inquiry forward."
