Minister gives evidence on Lisbon Treaty and European Council

The House of Lords European Union Select Committee hears evidence from Chris Bryant, Minister for Europe, at 4.10pm, on the implementation of the Lisbon Treaty, and the UK Government’s position on potential candidates for President of the European Council and EU High Representative.
The Lords Committee, which plays a key role in scrutinising EU legislation and holds regular meetings with the UK’s Europe Minister, will question Mr Bryant on how the Government sees the roles of President of the European Council and EU High Representative developing and who their preferred candidates for the positions are.
The Committee will also ask the Europe Minister for details of the Government’s position ahead of the Copenhagen climate change summit including what steps the Government will take to ensure an effective and enforceable agreement can be reached.
The Committee’s Annual Report was published on Monday 9 November, with details of how it will operate its new powers under the Lisbon Treaty, and how it has recently persuaded the EU Commission to move towards abandoning an entire Regulation on codifying a uniform format for visas.
