Rethink Parliament programme launched
11 November 2009 (updated on 22 April 2010)
The Speaker of the House of Commons, the Rt Hon John Bercow MP, opened the Rethink Parliament programme on 5 November 2009.
Rethink Parliament is an exciting programme run by Parliamentary Outreach in partnership with Rethink and Disability Arts Online. The programme will engage people affected by severe mental illness with the work and relevance of Parliament. Mental health service users and carers from Rethink will be working with international artist Rachel Gadsden in a total of 16 art workshops in England between November 2009 and July 2010.
The art workshops will explore the themes of engaging with Parliament and ‘finding your own voice’. Rethink Parliament is especially designed to be delivered in a fun, non-judgemental environment, giving participants a chance to develop and expand skills through the visual arts. The portraits produced by participants in the programme will become part of a digital exhibition available to view on the Parliamentary Outreach, Rethink and Disability Arts Online websites.
