Members of the House of Lords are not paid salaries but they can claim, within prescribed limits, expenses and allowances arising from performance of their parliamentary duties.

Detailed figures of the categories of expenses and allowances for the 2008/09 financial year, together with a briefing paper explaining the system, are published today:

Reform of the expenses and allowances system

In June 2009, the House of Lords House Committee referred the expenses system to the independent Review Body on Senior Salaries (SSRB) for review. The SSRB published its report on 26 November.

The House Committee has considered the SSRB’s recommendations, and its report recommending the adoption of a new scheme to be in place for the new Parliament next year, will be debated on 14 December.
