Statement: Using intercept evidence in court

Home Secretary, Alan Johnson, made a written ministerial statement to MPs on the use of intercept material as evidence in court

Mr Johnson told MPs that the practical testing done so far had not turned out to be legally viable. However, more analysis is going ahead in the following areas:
- further enhancing the judicial oversight available
- full retention of intercept material alongside alternative review requirements
- advances in technology which might make full retention and review more manageable
The Government will report on the results of this work before the Easter recess.
