Equality Bill: Lords committee stage

Members of the House of Lords began the line by line examination - committee stage - of the Equality Bill on 11 January.
Clauses 1-9 were discussed on topics including socio-economic inequality, gender reassignment, race, ethnicity and marriage and civil partnerships.

Detailed line by line examination of the separate parts (clauses and schedules) of the Bill takes place during committee stage. Any Member of the Lords can take part.
Every clause of the Bill has to be agreed to and votes on the amendments (proposals for change) can take place.
All proposed amendments can be discussed and there is no time limit – or guillotine - on discussion of amendments.
The second day of committee stage takes place on 13 January.
