Between 4-7 January 2010, the Lord Speaker, Baroness Hayman, attended the 20th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth in New Delhi, India.

The conference is held on a two-year cycle and brings together Speakers and Presiding Officers from national Parliaments across the Commonwealth. The last conference, in January 2008, was in London, which the Lord Speaker jointly hosted with Mr Speaker of the House of Commons.

Baroness Hayman commented:

"The conference proved to be very successful and was an excellent opportunity to meet colleagues from other parliamentary institutions and learn about their procedures and practices.

I was also delighted to meet the two hosting speakers, Smt. Meira Kumar, Speaker of the Lok Sabha (the Indian Lower House), and Shri Rahman Khan, Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha (Upper House)."
