Lords Committee welcomes adoption of recommendations

The House of Lords Constitution Committee have welcomed the Government’s adoption of its recommendations on fast-track legislation

The Committee’s report 'Fast-Track Legislation: Constitutional Implications and Safeguards', published on 9 July 2009, recommended that when introducing legislation which it will seek to fast-track, the Government should explain and justify the need for fast-tracking in both the explanatory notes to the Bill and in a statement to the House.
The Committee welcomes that the Government has acted on its recommendation in introducing the Video Recordings Bill, the first piece of fast-track legislation to be introduced since their report was published.
The Committee states that it regards the practices adopted for this Bill as a precedent that should apply to all future fast-track legislation.
The second reading and committee stage of the Video Recordings Bill in the House of Lords will take place on Monday 18 January. Video and audio feed from the Chamber is available from 2.30pm.
The report stage and third reading take place on Wednesday 20 January.
