Members of the House of Lords with experience of and expertise in a range of health, sport, social and children's rights issues discussed combating the rising trend of obesity in young people on 7 January.

Lord Pendry, who opened the debate, outlined statistics indicating 30 per cent of girls aged between two and 15, and 31 per cent of boys, are classed as overweight. Of the girls, 16 per cent are obese, while for the boys the figure is 17 per cent.

The discussion also covered social and health inequalities, medical issues resulting from obesity, expanding sporting activity provision and healthy diet and nutrition measures.

In the House of Lords Members may table questions for debate, usually up to two hours and a half, on a specific issue or matter of concern. A minister responds on behalf of the Government.
