Plans for Queen’s Diamond Jubilee announced

The Government's plans to mark the Queen's diamond jubilee in 2012 were announced in a statement in the House of Commons by Ian Lucas, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

Although plans are still at an early stage Mr Lucas confirmed the following:

  • the celebrations will take place around the first week of June 2012
  • the creation of a special diamond jubilee weekend, moving the late May bank holiday to Monday 4 June, and adding an extra bank holiday on Tuesday 5 Juune
  • issue of a diamond jubilee medal
  • holding national competitions for city status, a lord mayoralty and a lord provostship
  • royal borough status for the London borough of Greenwich

Although the Department of Culture, Media and Sport is responsible for co-ordinating Her Majesty’s diamond jubilee celebrations, Lord Mandelson, Secretary of State for the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, is the lead Minister responsible for this project.

Lord Mandelson made a statement in the House of Lords about the plans on 5 January.
