President of Portuguese Parliament
19 January 2010 (updated on 22 April 2010)
Baroness Hayman, the Lord Speaker, met with Mr Jamie Gama, the President of the Portuguese Parliament, on 18 January.
The Portuguese President was in the UK to attend a reception in the River Room, House of Lords, marking the 200th anniversary of the Lines of Torres Vedras - lines of forts built to defend Lisbon during the Peninsular War (1807-14).
The Lines played a vital role in the Anglo-Portuguese Army’s defence of the region and the Portuguese authorities are currently engaged in a project to preserve what remains.
The Lord Speaker commented:
"I was delighted to be able to meet Mr Gama [pictured centre-right], along with other members of his assembly, and attend a reception afterwards hosted by the All Party Groups for Portugal and War Graves and Battlefield Heritage."
