Statement: Improving UK protection against terrorism

In a statement to the Commons Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, announced new UK measures to track terrorist suspects and strengthen airport security.

Key measures are:
- extension of the current Home Office watch list
- new no-fly list
- new list of those subject to special measures, including enhanced screening before boarding flights to the UK
- an electronic check - by the end of 2010 - against a watch list 24 hours prior to travel, of all passengers arriving from other countries at all major UK airports and ports
- immediate suspension of all direct flights from Yemen to the UK
- research on devices capable of identifying potential explosives anywhere on the body
