Committee hear evidence from insurance industry on Somali piracy

The House of Lords EU Sub-Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Development Policy hear evidence from the insurance and shipping industries at 10.35 am as part of its inquiry into piracy off the coast of Somalia

The Committee is looking at the EU’s Operation Atalanta and will be seeking views on the effectiveness of the operation as perceived by the insurance and shipping sectors, and on the particular contributions of these sectors to the Operation.
Topics will include how the insurance industry can reduce the risk of piracy by methods such as weighting premiums, how the shipping industry can protect ships and reduce the frequency and success rate of pirate attacks, and the policy of both industries on the payment of ransoms to pirates.
